Meet Our New Trustee, Carla

Carla has been involved with Royal Caledonian Education Trust (RCET) since 2011, firstly as a beneficiary, then as a volunteer.

She originally applied for financial support from the RCET aged 18 when she was accepted into The University of Edinburgh to study Cognitive Science and needed support with the purchase of books, food and accommodation.

Carla says:

“RCET helped me in my time of need for which I will be forever grateful and keen to repay in kind.  When I met my former Head Teacher from 1998-2000 (Mrs Moira Lesley) again, I jumped at the chance to volunteer and offered my services for this amazing Charity. The opportunity to assist with the fundraising department and being able to help others was personally a satisfying and rewarding privilege.”

Changing her syllabus to study BA (Hons) Community Education allowed Carla to discover how much she loved to help and support others, especially military families, with whom she says she has a natural affinity as her father and two brothers are still serving in the military. On gaining her degree, she spent two and a half years travelling Australia and South East Asia and worked in Coventry, England. Carla is now employed in Dumfries as a Youth Development Worker doing what she enjoys most; working with young people.

Carla hopes to be an inspiration and of personal help to other Armed Forces children and give a fresh perspective for the board that will support the future of Royal Caledonian Education Trust.
